What is dehydration? Dehydration happens when your body doesn’t have as much water as it needs to function properly. Your body is made up of 75% water. Maintaining proper levels is important for all bodily functions, including those that can impact your golf score! Signs of mild to moderate dehydration according to the Mayo Clinic can include: headache, cramps, dry and cool skin, not peeing much, dark yellow pee, and thirst. Signs of severe dehydration can include: feeling dizzy, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, lack of energy, confusion, irritability, and fainting.

Staying hydrated isn’t difficult, but let’s admit it, sometimes life gets in the way of proper self care. If you find yourself approaching a day or weekend of golf, but haven’t kept up with your hydration for the week, it is important you take appropriate steps to prevent dehydration on the course, especially if you’re expecting warm temperatures. Consuming water the morning of, throughout the day, and after the round is an easy and obvious step in the right direction. Reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption is another great move. If that’s not enough to close the gap, some golfers have turned to IV hydration for rapid rehydration.
